Josh Murks bought the rights to the brand's Florence, Alabama location and is already considering multi-unit ownership.

Lennys Grill & Subs—the South’s favorite all-American sub sandwich franchise—has always been a go-to spot for Josh Murks. For years, he stopped by the brand’s location in Florence, Alabama to grab a made-to-order, freshly grilled sandwich whenever he needed a quick and delicious bite to eat. But it wasn’t until he discovered that the franchisee running the local restaurant was looking to sell the rights to a new owner that he considered making his love of Lennys a part of his professional career.

“When I found out about the franchising opportunity with Lennys, I was working for my family’s pest control company. Taking over the restaurant seemed like the perfect way to break out on my own and grow a different kind of business,” said Murks. “It’s a decision that’s definitely paid off—I’m already getting great feedback from customers and seeing just how much this brand is able to expand.”

There are multiple advantages for franchisees who enter Lennys Grill & Subs’ system through a store transfer. For starters, those locations have an existing base of loyal customers. Franchisees aren’t building the brand’s presence from the ground up—consumers in the area are already aware of what Lennys is all about. Taking over an existing location also gives business owners a chance to take that foundation and build on it.

“We work with new franchisees to make sure that they have all the tools and resources they need in order to make their transition into an existing store seamless,” said Kevin Martin, president and CEO of Lennys Grill & Subs. “We go above and beyond to make sure our owners are positioned for success.”

Murks is already seeing that support system at work. Since taking over the Lennys location in Florence, he’s worked with both the corporate team and his own employees to expand the brand’s reach throughout the local community. That means making sure that consumers are aware of Lennys’ initiative to re-brand from Lennys Subs to Lennys Grill & Subs.

The brand is positioning itself in the market in an effort to better educate consumers about its extensive menu. Lennys’ line of premium grilled Philly subs are fan favorites and best sellers across its entire system, so the brand wants to recognize the success of their grilled products in its name.

“No one can compete with our Philly cheesesteak. It’s the best one out there by far,” said Murks. “Even though I just took over my local Lennys, I’m already looking forward to expanding with the brand in the future and introducing more people to the new Lennys Grill & Subs concept. The brand’s growth potential is strong, and there’s a real opportunity to keep pushing its standards higher.”
